Punjab committee approves Christian Marriage Bill 2026 with mandatory registration

The Punjab Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights and Minority Affairs in Lahore unanimously approved the Christian Marriage Bill 2026 on Wednesday.

New legal framework replaces old act

The legislation aims to repeal the Christian Marriage Act of 1872. Mover Philebos Christopher presented the draft to replace the colonial-era law with a modern system. The committee agreed to introduce a fresh legal structure for marriages within the province.

Registration and age limits change

Marriages must now be registered with the Union Council and NADRA. Both parties are required to be Christians under the new rules. The minimum marriageable age rises to 18 years for men and women.

Churches and priests authorized

Solemnization will occur in registered churches following Christian rites. Priests with religious education can conduct these ceremonies if their church is registered. Written notice and a formal declaration are also part of the process.
