President Zardari approves ordinance to protect Islamabad Safe City cameras
President Asif Ali Zardari approved an ordinance in Islamabad on Saturday to protect the capital's Safe City surveillance infrastructure from damage.
Penalties for damaging cameras
The new rules allow financial penalties of up to Rs2 million for each damaged camera or piece of infrastructure. An authorised officer will determine the fine and repair costs after giving the person concerned a chance to be heard.
Responsibility for public gatherings
Organisers of rallies, processions, sit-ins, protests, strikes or other gatherings may also face responsibility if damage occurs during their events. If fines or compensation are not paid, the amounts can be recovered as arrears of land revenue.
Appeals and fund usage
The person concerned has the right to appeal against the determination before the District and Sessions Judge in Islamabad within 30 days. Funds collected through penalties will be used for repairing and replacing the damaged surveillance equipment.
