Pakistan warns of regional peace risks if Indus Waters Treaty rights are violated

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar addressed the International Water Symposium in Vienna on Tuesday to warn that depriving Pakistan of its water share under the Indus Waters Treaty would threaten regional security.

Commitment to legal frameworks

Dar stated that Pakistan prefers cooperation and dialogue over coercion and confrontation. He emphasized that the treaty must be respected in letter and spirit regardless of current political relations between the two nations.

Warning against unilateral actions

The deputy premier noted that any attempt to suspend or terminate the agreement unilaterally would have serious implications for stability. He argued that shared waters create a permanent interdependence among countries sharing transboundary river systems.

Link between water and food

Dar pointed out that water security is inseparable from food security for Pakistan. He added that the availability of water increasingly determines the stability of relations among states in the region.
