Delegate warns of misuse risks

Pakistani delegate Gul Qaiser Sarwani stated that the misuse of the veto undermines the effectiveness and credibility of the United Nations. He argued that this power gives the permanent five unmatched influence throughout the UN system while perpetuating inequalities.

Opposition to new permanent seats

The counsellor at the Pakistan Mission opposed creating any new permanent seats in an expanded Security Council. He warned that adding more members would deepen existing inequalities and increase the risk of institutional paralysis.

Call for restricted veto use

Pakistan favoured the abolition or severe restriction of the veto power to promote greater accountability. Representatives reiterated calls to restructure the Council to make it more responsive to maintaining international peace and security.
