Pakistan glacial lakes count rises to 105 in two months
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission reported that the number of unfrozen glacial lakes in Pakistan increased from 40 to 105 between July and August.
Satellite imagery shows rapid increase
Suparco assessed data using optical satellite imagery acquired on August 5. The agency noted that rising summer temperatures caused the observed growth in unfrozen water bodies.
Some lakes exceed past records
The latest assessment indicates that a few lakes have expanded beyond their previously recorded maximum extents. This temporal variation shows changes in lake size or boundary over time.
Cloud cover limits accuracy
Persistent cloud cover after the July report made it difficult to accurately assess area changes. Consequently, the availability of clear satellite imagery was limited during this period.
