Lahore ranks as most polluted city globally with hazardous air quality
Lahore was ranked the world's most polluted major city on Friday morning according to monitoring platform IQAir.

Pollution levels reach dangerous heights
The city recorded an air quality index of 410 which falls into the hazardous category. New Delhi followed in second place with a reading of 203 while Dakar came third at 196. Lahore was the only Pakistani capital to appear on the top twenty list for that day.
Primary pollutant identified as particles
Fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 is the main substance causing these high readings. These tiny particles measure 2.5 micrometres or less and can enter deep into human lungs. Current concentrations are reported at 45.2 times the annual guideline set by the World Health Organisation.
Causes include vehicles and industry
Industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust contribute significantly to the smog seen in winter months. Burning crop residue and specific weather conditions also limit how pollutants disperse across the region. Karachi appeared on a broader list with an index of 110 but did not reach the top twenty.
