Punjab approves 10-day Basant festival in Lahore for January to February 2027

Festival dates and Kashmir Day break

The celebrations will begin on January 29 and conclude on February 7. Authorities plan to suspend festivities for one day on February 5 to observe Kashmir Day. This schedule extends the event beyond the three-day festival held earlier this year.

Safety measures and cultural promotion

The chief minister directed officials to implement stronger safety arrangements than those used previously. She stated that the event would promote Punjab's cultural heritage and Lahore's historic traditions globally. Citizens were also urged to celebrate responsibly while following established safety regulations.

Previous ban and recent return

Kite flying was banned in 2020 due to deaths caused by sharp strings and gunfire. The festival returned in February 2026 after the provincial government lifted the long-standing prohibition. Preparations now include registration requirements for kite manufacturers and a dedicated digital portal.
