Zoox halts Atlanta autonomous vehicle fleet over toxic gas exposure reports
Zoox has grounded its test fleet in Atlanta after workers reported symptoms from potential toxic gas exposure inside vehicles last month.
OSHA investigation launched
Safety drivers experienced exposure to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or hydrogen sulfide. One worker filed a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration following repeated incidents. The agency opened an inquiry and ordered Zoox to investigate the exposures.
Workers sent back to field
At least one group of workers returned to driving after one person vomited. Contractors stated that this second vehicle may have also contained toxic gases because symptoms appeared again later that day. Jay Davis told TechCrunch that the company made sick employees return to the field immediately.
Facility operates at limited capacity
The northwest Atlanta facility has run at reduced capacity since August 22 when someone called 911. Test vehicles remain quarantined while Zoox continues its investigation into the reported exposures.
