Woman diagnosed with lichen sclerosus after years of dismissed symptoms
Monica Thomas from Suffolk was eventually diagnosed with lichen sclerosus after experiencing intimate itching and soreness for years.

Initial medical visits caused delays
Thomas began seeing doctors in her teens when she started feeling constant pain. She underwent twenty eight examinations over six months before receiving a biopsy offer. Her symptoms were initially dismissed as thrush despite worsening conditions.
Diagnosis reveals inflammatory condition risks
The final diagnosis identified lichen sclerosus as the cause of her white patches and tears. This lifelong inflammatory issue affects genitals and carries a small risk of vulval cancer. It is not contagious but can make sexual intercourse and passing urine very sore.
