Daily life restrictions for patient

Hayat chooses tables far from others when eating out or sits near open windows. She also avoids cinemas and airplanes to prevent being too close to diners or fellow passengers. These choices stem from a decade-long struggle with persistent insecurity regarding her scent.

Medical cause of the smell

The condition is driven by a bacterial imbalance rather than poor hygiene habits. Sweat itself remains odourless until skin bacteria digest fatty secretions from apocrine glands. These glands are located around the armpits, breasts and groin areas.

Expert view on the process

Chris Callewaert at Ghent University notes that fifteen minutes after a shower can be enough for the smell to return. He describes this as a natural bodily process that has gone awry in these patients.
