Upadacitinib drug shows hair regrowth success in alopecia trials
Researchers report that upadacitinib, a rheumatoid arthritis medication sold as Rinvoq, helped patients with alopecia areata regain significant hair growth in two phase 3 clinical trials.
Study results on hair regrowth
About half of the participants taking lower and higher doses of upadacitinib grew enough hair to cover at least 80 percent of their scalp. Only about 2 percent of people given a placebo achieved that same degree of regrowth. The medication blocks the immune system response responsible for this autoimmune condition.
Existing treatment options available
Other JAK inhibitor medications are currently available for treating hair loss. Experts say upadacitinib could provide another option for people with alopecia areata. Various existing treatments include topical medications, injections, and laser therapy.
