Stem-cell trial for type 1 diabetes patients begins in Beijing
Researchers at Peking University in Beijing have started a clinical trial using stem cells to treat type 1 diabetes.

Mingyu, a participant using a pseudonym, had previously received two liver transplants and one pancreas transplant. Her doctor suggested she join the study after she suffered three life-threatening episodes of low blood sugar. The team took a small sample of her fat cells to begin the process.
Cell reprogramming method
Scientists reprogrammed the collected fat cells into induced pluripotent stem cells for the treatment. These iPSCs are designed to become insulin-producing cells that can be transplanted back into the patient. The goal is to restore the body's ability to regulate blood-sugar levels without lifelong insulin therapy.
