Social media users claim low iron causes visible facial signs

TikTok and Instagram posts are circulating claims that low ferritin levels create specific facial features known as ferritin face.

Online claims about iron deficiency

Content creators on TikTok and Instagram share before-and-after photos linking dark circles, pale skin, and brittle hair to low iron stores. Users attribute these physical changes directly to depleted ferritin levels in their bodies. Videos featuring these comparisons have attracted millions of views across social media platforms.

Medical experts warn against diagnosis

Doctors state that appearance alone cannot diagnose iron deficiency or anaemia based on visual clues. General practitioner Dr Aziza Sesay noted that while symptoms may suggest an issue, they are not a medical diagnosis. Other conditions can also cause pale skin, hair shedding, or dry lips.
