Trial design and enrollment targets

The Center for Addiction Science, Policy and Research is organizing the effort alongside the Allegheny County Department of Human Services. Researchers will randomly assign half of the participants to take Novo Nordisk's Wegovy while the other half receive a different treatment. The study aims to enroll up to 1,200 adults who have alcohol use disorder or opioid use disorder.

Scope of social outcome testing

Investigators will look at whether the medication helps reduce recidivism rates among those at high risk of criminal justice involvement. The trial also measures improvements in employment, health, and housing for the enrolled participants. This approach tests effects beyond simple addiction recovery metrics.
