Pakistan Drug Regulatory Authority mandates barcoding for medicines today
The Pakistan Drug Regulatory Authority introduced a mandatory barcoding and serialization system for pharmaceutical products effective immediately in Islamabad.

New tracking rules start now
Pharmaceutical companies must place a 2D barcode and a unique serial number on packaging for eligible medicines. This requirement covers both locally manufactured drugs and imported medicines that fall under the new regulations. Stocks produced before today will follow separate conditions specified by the authority.
Goal is to stop fakes
The system allows authorities to track medicines from manufacturing through to distribution channels. Consumers can also use the barcodes to verify the authenticity of their medicine purchases. The initiative aims to prevent counterfeit drugs and enhance transparency within the sector.
Health minister set future date
Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal previously announced a plan to barcode all medicines within 60 days. That earlier announcement occurred during his visit to the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association headquarters on Saturday.
