Novo Nordisk stops trials after drug failed to prevent heart events
Novo Nordisk halted clinical trials for its experimental anti-inflammatory drug ziltivekimab after data showed it did not reduce serious cardiovascular outcomes in patients with severe illness.

Trial results show no benefit
The ZEUS study found that the drug lowered interleukin-6 levels but did not limit heart attacks, strokes, or deaths. Patients receiving the treatment had similar rates of serious events compared to those taking a placebo. These findings were presented at the American Heart Association sessions and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Company halts other research
Following the disclosure of top-line results, Novo Nordisk stopped two additional trials named HERMES and ATHENA. A data monitoring committee determined in September that these studies were unlikely to succeed. The company made this decision after reviewing the lack of clinical benefit.
