New synthetic opioid nitazenes drive sharp rise in Scottish drug deaths
National Records of Scotland released data showing an 11 percent increase in drug fatalities across Scotland in 2025.
Fatalities reach sixth highest level
Annual figures recorded 1,133 deaths related to drugs last year. This total represents 116 more lives lost than the previous year. The count marks the sixth highest number on record for the nation.
Nitazenes cause major surge
Deaths involving nitazenes jumped from 76 cases in 2024 to 247 in 2025. These synthetic opioids are hundreds of times stronger than traditional opiates. They are manufactured in illegal laboratories and often mixed with other substances.
Traditional drugs remain deadliest
Opiates and opioids such as heroin accounted for 78 percent of all fatalities. Ministers stated that the toxic supply requires coordinated action across the country. Charities warned that recent drops in deaths might mask a larger underlying trend.
