Immediate restrictions take effect Thursday

Officials ordered a stop to open garbage burning and told food vendors to quit using coal or firewood. Current readings show pollution levels at 233 micrograms per cubic meter, which is about 15 times the safety limit.

Sources include traffic and farming

Coal power plants, vehicle exhaust, construction dust, and burning crop stubble in nearby regions contribute to the toxic mix. The Commission for Air Quality Management expects conditions to stay poor over the coming days.

Health risks remain high for kids

A United Nations agency notes that children face a greater danger of acute respiratory infections from this smog. A recent study linked millions of deaths in India to pollution exceeding national guidelines between 2009 and 2019.
