Nearly half of female footballers consider early retirement due to financial and mental health issues
A new Fifpro report released in 2026 finds that almost half of surveyed women's footballers are considering leaving the sport early.

Financial pressures drive departures
The survey interviewed 800 players worldwide and found stark disparities in working conditions. Among those considering an early exit, 59% cited their financial situation as a primary reason for leaving.
Mental health struggles cited
Psychological stress was identified by 46% of the players who planned to quit sooner than expected. The report notes that average monthly wages have tripled since 2017 but remain uneven across regions.
Industry growth remains uneven
Fifpro director Alex Culvin stated that while the industry has progressed, a long way remains for most players. In many eastern European countries analyzed, average salaries still fall below national minimum wage levels.
