April Coulson suffered a spinal cord bleed seven years ago that left her unable to move from the armpits down. Doctors later identified rare blood vessel malformations in her body as the likely cause of the injury.
Support workers funded by scheme
After returning home, she required daily assistance for showering and dressing through support workers funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The plan also covered a wheelchair and a ramp to her family home in Brisbane.
Therapy hours cut recently
The NDIS recently slashed her physical therapy sessions citing value for money even though experts advised against the change. Coulson states she was told this decision contradicted professional medical guidance regarding her rehabilitation needs.
