Medical volunteers treated heat stroke cases during the record hot NYC Marathon on Nov 6
Medical providers at the New York City Marathon on November 6, 2022, treated runners suffering from heat stroke amid unseasonably high temperatures.

Overheated athletes filled the medical tent
The finish-line medical tent became crowded with collapsed runners around the three-and-a-half-hour mark of the race. Temperatures were climbing higher than usual for the event that day. Volunteers noted that athletes of all levels showed visible signs of distress from the heat.
One patient had a temperature of 107 degrees
A middle-aged man named John collapsed at the finish line with an oral temperature reading of 107 degrees. Medical staff moved him to a critical care area and began cooling him with bags of ice. The tent's only cold-water immersion tub was already occupied by another overheated young woman.
Equipment shortages complicated emergency response efforts
The medical team faced a backlog on the electrolyte analyzer while every vital-signs monitor remained in use. Providers had to ration monitors based on which patients would benefit most from immediate attention. Despite being flanked by major hospitals, the volunteers practiced resource management inside Manhattan.
