Martha’s rule expands to every A&E in England
NHS officials announced that Martha's rule, a system allowing reviews of patient care, will be expanded to all emergency departments in England.
New review process for patients
The initiative enables patients, relatives and staff to request a different medical team examine their care. This expansion covers waiting rooms as well as inpatient wards across the country.
System named after Martha Mills
The rule is named after Martha Mills, who died from sepsis in 2021 after a bicycle accident. A coroner suggested she might have survived if transferred to intensive care sooner.
Campaigners pushed for the change
Martha's parents campaigned for years before politicians and doctors introduced the scheme in 2024. In its first 16 months, helplines received over 10,000 calls that potentially saved 446 lives.
