Meeting at a Scottish party

Dench wrote that she and her husband were staying at Billy Connolly's home in Scotland when they met the comedian. They attended a gathering in the woods featuring a ceilidh and a bonfire before heading up a steep hill. Michael Williams was very ill at the time, and Dench noted he seemed to be flagging.

Williams offers gentle assistance

Robin Williams appeared beside the couple and offered to help them walk up the hill. Michael said he could manage on his own, but Williams insisted on riding shotgun anyway. Dench described this moment as a lovely display of sensitivity and understanding without imposing himself.

History of their professional work

The two actors had previously worked together in the 1996 film Hamlet. Williams later presented Dench with her Oscar for best supporting actress in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love.
