New law ensures product access

Public health director Matt Tyrer stated that period products are basic health and hygiene items. The scheme aims to prevent people from missing school, work, or daily activities due to lack of supplies. Low-income households will be prioritized so those who menstruate can obtain these essentials without cost.

Legislation introduced by local member

MHK Joney Faragher introduced the Period Products (free provision) Act bill as a private members bill in 2024. The legislation received Royal Assent recently but will not become active until October 2027. This initiative follows similar programmes already running in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Activists welcome the decision

Rhian Evans, a co-founder of the Manx Menstrual Movement, described the Royal Assent as a long time coming. She and Nicki Gaskell created the movement in 2023 after addressing issues of period poverty on the island. The group previously established donation stations across the Isle of Man and at Douglas City Library.
