HILDA survey data for 2024 reveals shifts in Australian parental leave and mental health trends
Researchers released the latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey results covering more than 17,000 people across Australia in 2024.
Parental leave uptake increases
Mothers took an average of more than four months of paid parental leave in the most recent surveys. Fathers averaged just four weeks but their leave time has climbed at a faster rate than for women over the period.
Mental health declines for young women
Self-reported mental health scores for women across most age groups have declined since 2001 according to the survey data. The drop is particularly noticeable among young women aged between 15 and 24 years old.
Older men report better wellness
The trend regarding mental health for men mirrors the pattern seen in other demographic groups within the study. Older men continue to report better mental wellness compared to younger cohorts in the dataset.
