FDA upgrades Publix frozen berry recall to highest health risk level
The US Food and Drug Administration upgraded a recall of frozen GreenWise berries sold at Publix stores in the United States to Class I on August 18.
Recall covers four specific products
Publix issued a recall for four lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries. The affected items include both 10-ounce and 48-ounce packages with specific UPC codes listed by the retailer. Customers are advised to discard these products or return them to any Publix location for a refund.
Contamination linked to E coli
The initial recall was triggered by potential contamination from E coli found in the frozen berry products. This upgrade follows a separate July 3 recall of similar blueberries sourced from a facility in San Carlos, Chile. The CDC reported 12 cases of symptoms typical for E coli infection as of July 30.
Chain operates across eight states
This Class I recall impacts all Publix supermarkets operating within the United States. The supermarket chain currently runs 1,413 stores located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
