FDA approves Eli Lilly weekly insulin Onswik for Type 2 diabetes patients
The US Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly's new weekly basal insulin, Onswik, for adults with Type 2 diabetes.
Weekly injection reduces annual shots
This treatment allows patients to take one shot every seven days instead of daily injections. The company states this change could lower the total number of yearly injections by over 300 for some users.
Clinical trial results support approval
Regulators reviewed data from a program involving more than 3,400 adults who participated in four randomized studies. In each case, the drug reduced average blood sugar levels without showing inferiority compared to daily basal insulin options.
Availability expected soon
The medication will be sold in prefilled pens with two different unit strengths starting in the coming months. It is intended for use alongside diet and exercise to help manage high blood sugar.
