FDA approves Eli Lilly once-weekly insulin for type 2 diabetes
The US Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly's new once-weekly basal insulin injection for adults with type 2 diabetes in Washington.
New treatment reduces injection frequency
Eli Lilly stated that the Onswik pen could lower the number of annual injections by more than 300 compared to daily options. The product is expected to arrive in US pharmacies as a prefilled KwikPen with concentrations of 500 and 1,000 units per milliliter.
Clinical trial results show efficacy
Approval relied on four studies involving over 3,400 participants who showed reductions in A1C levels comparable to daily insulin glargine. The drug previously received regulatory clearance in Europe, Japan and Mexico before this US decision.
Usage requires diet and exercise
The company indicated that the medication works alongside lifestyle changes to help control high blood sugar in patients. This option provides an alternative for those currently using long-acting insulin injections every day.
