Esther Rantzen, the television presenter and founder of Childline, died at age 86 in September 2026.
Family tributes and legacy
Her family released a statement describing her as a wonderful mother and cherished grandmother. They noted that her legacy of compassion will continue through Childline and the Silverline charities. Her children remembered her endless capacity for joy and her ability to comfort others.
Cancer diagnosis and campaign work
Rantzen announced a stage four lung cancer diagnosis in 2023 and became a vocal campaigner for assisted dying laws. She planned to travel to the Swiss clinic Dignitas but abandoned the trip in September 2026 due to physical frailty. She stated that she was not physically ready to end her life when she finally felt pain was unbearable.
Plans for assisted dying
She had spent money and made plans to travel to Dignitas before realizing it would be her last chance. She expressed gratitude that she could relax in her cottage in the New Forest when she was strong enough to fly. Her family said they are grateful she is at rest with her husband Desmond Wilcox.
