Werner Herzog receives Donostia Award at San Sebastian Film Festival
German filmmaker Werner Herzog accepted the prestigious Donostia Award at the opening ceremony of the San Sebastian Film Festival on Friday night in northern Spain.
Award presentation and speech
Orlando Bloom presented the honor to Herzog, who thanked him for the gesture. The director described Bloom as a living legend at a young age. Herzog stated he was not there as a foreigner but with a long connection to the Basque people.
Journey through the Pyrenees
The filmmaker explained that he traveled on foot from Cannes into the Pyrenees mountain range many years ago. He noted the distance covered was more than 1,000 kilometers. Herzog admitted his original destination was Biarritz instead of San Sebastian.

Herzog is currently screening his latest feature Bucking Fastards at the festival. The movie stars Kate Mara, Rooney Mara, Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson. The event took place at the Kursaal Theatre before a standing ovation.
