White House comments on deal

Trump told reporters he was happy about the merger and called the new company great. He stated that the people involved are terrific while expressing gladness that the deal proceeded without further conditions.

Legal path to approval

The Justice Department approved the transaction in June without attaching any conditions to the agreement. A judge finalized the process on September 30 after Paramount settled an antitrust lawsuit with twelve Democratic state attorneys general.

Concerns over CNN ownership

David Ellison previously argued that the litigation against the merger was politically motivated rather than based on market share. He wrote in a New York Times op-ed that fears about his stewardship of CNN drove the legal challenges.
