Tarmo Peltokoski leads HK Phil premiere of Mahler Symphony No 8
Conductor Tarmo Peltokoski officially began his four-year tenure as music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra with a premiere performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No 8 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on Saturday.

Massive ensemble performs rare work
The 85-minute piece required nearly 600 musicians and singers to perform on stage. Six different choirs joined the orchestra for this ambitious production at the venue. The choir section occupied about a third of the balcony seats during the concert.
Specific groups took part
Participants included the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus and the London Philharmonic Choir among others. St Paul's Co-educational College Senior Mixed-Voice Choir also performed alongside Ying Wa College Choir. The Hong Kong Children's Choir completed the list of six groups involved in the event.
New chapter for orchestra
This performance marked the start of Peltokoski's contract as the ensemble's ninth music director. The youthful maestro took the podium to lead this specific monumental work by Mahler. The concert formalised the beginning of his official four-year appointment with the group.
