Early life and initial advice

Arroyo was born into an era where black American opera singers faced significant institutional prejudice. Despite early talent, she received advice to secure a backup career due to limited opportunities for her demographic. She worked as a high school teacher for one year before taking on social work roles.

Breakthrough performances in 1958

Recognition arrived in March 1958 when she won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air. Later that September, she performed her debut at Carnegie Hall in an American premiere of Assassinio nella Cattedrale. Her official Metropolitan Opera debut followed the next year in a small role within Don Carlo.

Career trajectory and retirement

She sang supporting roles for three seasons before being advised to pursue her career in Europe. After retiring from the stage, she became a distinguished teacher and ambassador for the art form.
