Actress describes casting challenge

Johansson stated the role was very hard to figure out during an interview for her new movie Paper Tiger. She explained that she does not know whether the difficulty stemmed from the character itself or her current life stage. The actress admitted the experience gave her a lot of existential angst for some reason.

Production leadership changes

Director Matt Reeves temporarily stepped away from the project due to a personal matter before Oscar-winning Steven Soderbergh took over production duties. Casting was confirmed in May via an X post that showed only a GIF of Johansson's reflection in a car mirror. Several other superhero alumni including Sebastian Stan and Brian Tyree Henry were also cast in undisclosed roles alongside her.
