Early career beginnings

Davies was born in Swansea in 1963 to a family that enjoyed watching television. While studying English at Oxford, a friend suggested he consider working in television as a profession.

Industry experiences

He worked on children's television writing for puppets before gaining experience at Granada Studios in Manchester. Colleagues there included Sally Wainwright, Paul Abbott and the late Kay Mellor.

Creative evolution

Davies created a period drama called The Grand but found viewers were turning off due to heavy themes. A friend advised him to write with humor after noting his funny nature.
