Surreal final scenes for Trowbridge

Kinnear's character, British prime minister Nicol Trowbridge, steps down midway through the latest season. In his final appearance, the actor imagines a deceased adviser is still alive and hallucinates that U.S. officials are mocking him. He also sings an opera aria while wearing both king and clown costumes during this surreal sequence.

Real life reasons for shakeup

Showrunner Debora Cahn stated there were grounded, real-life reasons for the government changes in this season. She noted that the actual United Kingdom had five different people at 10 Downing Street by the time production reached this point. These events felt essential to depicting the nature of being a diplomat.
