Ramón Llaven returns to Oaxaca for Dance of the Souls documentary
Filmmaker Ramón Llaven has returned to his native Oaxaca to document the local muerteadas tradition for a new film screening at Mexico's Morelia Film Festival.

Filmmaker returns after long absence
Llaven spent nearly 15 years away from his home region before coming back to observe the event. He produced the documentary with Fata Morgana and Eudiamonía Films alongside Estudios Churubusco Azteca and Lost Time Media. The project focuses on a unique celebration held in the Etla Valley communities.
Documentary follows wandering spirit
The film uses a mystical narrative device to follow a soul returning for the Day of the Dead. This perspective allows locals to prepare for one of Oaxaca's most important celebrations while remembering lost loved ones. Masked revelers in elaborate costumes dance with brass bands and wear bells and mirrors during the festivities.
Festival screenings begin soon
The documentary will screen at Mexico City's DocsMX and the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival in addition to Morelia. Llaven intends to weave childhood memories of a spiritual healer named Doña Julia into the story. The tradition involves dancing for over 12 hours accompanied by music and specific costume elements.
