Research informed the whale interior design

Avery began the project by examining autopsy photos of sperm whales. He worked closely with biomedical research scientist Dr Joy Reidenberg to ensure accuracy.

Practical sets featured a functional tongue

The team created a 30-foot whale head mounted on an animatronic arm. This prop included a functional tongue that could open and close during filming.

Filming challenges varied by location inside

The design of the set changed depending on where the character was located within the whale. Filming in water added additional difficulties to the production process.
