Elephants follow dry riverbeds to Atlantic Ocean

The photographer guided a group through the arid landscape where elephants travel from western hills toward the sea. These sandy rivers hold vegetation that serves as a vital lifeline for the animals even without water. Tracks in the sand allowed the team to locate the specific herd after they moved along the dry bed.

Unusual dragging mark led to discovery

The group noticed an unusual dragging mark among the elephant tracks while walking along the riverbed at night. This sign indicated something different from normal movement patterns within the herd. The team followed these clues until they found the mother and her calf the next day.

Photographer has lived in Kenya for decades

Federico Veronesi has spent twenty years living in Kenya after his first safari experience at age six. He currently guides photographers on safaris across the Maasai Mara National Reserve and other African locations. His long history with African wildlife began when he was a child growing up in Milan.
