More than 100 New Yorkers gathered outside the theater on a rainy Sunday afternoon to oppose its expected shutdown. Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal stood in solidarity with attendees during the rally organized by local political groups. Several city officials stated they learned about the private sale only after the transaction had already been completed.
Surprise acquisition by university
New York State Sen. Kristen Gonzalez expressed surprise that residents had to contact NYU directly to discover the land deal. The multiplex was identified as the second-largest AMC location in Manhattan before it faces closing at the end of this year. Lucy Di Lorenzo, a lifelong resident, attended the event to support the cultural institution she has visited since childhood.
