Production draws on regional reality

The six-episode series remains the top show in Netflix global rankings. Production designer Emmanuel Fréchette noted that over 300 towns in Newfoundland have been resettled since 1954. Creator Jesse McKeown spent years visiting the region to ensure an authentic depiction of its culture.

Cast participates in local traditions

Cast members engaged in the famous tradition of becoming honorary citizens by kissing a cod at St. John's Christian's Pub. Visitors known as CFAs or Come from Aways are screeched into the community during this ritual. The show mixes these real elements with a fictional giant squid terrorizing the area.
