Nepal, Singapore and Israel submit films for 99th Academy Awards
Film campaigns from Nepal, Singapore, Israel, Romania, South Korea, Chile and other nations have joined the list of international entries for the Oscars with final submissions due on October 1.
New rules expand eligibility
A new Academy rule now allows any film winning a top prize at one of six major festivals to enter the race without national committee backing. The eligible festivals include Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Busan and Toronto. France has not yet submitted a film despite having several disparate choices available.
Recent festival winners included
This year's entries feature Romania's Fjord which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Chile's The Meltdown screened in Un Certain Regard while Germany's Everytime won the Un Certain Regard prize. Nepal's Elephants in the Fog also premiered in Un Certain Regard and won the section's Jury Prize.
Shortlist and nomination dates
The Oscars shortlists will be revealed on December 15 when 15 international films are selected for voting. Academy members in all branches must watch all 15 films before casting their votes. Oscar nominations will be officially revealed on January 21.
