MTV Video Music Awards reach highest viewership in over a decade

The MTV Video Music Awards drew their largest audience in more than ten years on Sunday night.

Audience numbers climb significantly

The show averaged 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, marking a 51 percent increase from last year. This total represents the biggest audience since the 2015 event brought in more than 12 million people.

Performers win major honors

Madonna received seven awards and opened the program with a performance featuring Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter. Taylor Swift won video of the year for her song The Fate of Ophelia and received the first Artist Director award.

Sports programming boosted ratings

Viewership peaked at 15 million during Madonna's opening number which followed a Baltimore Ravens victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The awards also included tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael while Nirvana received the Video Vanguard honor.
