Production approach differed from earlier seasons
Creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan allowed the team to take liberties with the script. This freedom helped fill lingering questions about the 1892 Massachusetts murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. The series depicts Lizzie Borden being tried and acquitted for killing her father and stepmother.
Final scene connects modern killer to past
The season finale shows Aileen Wuornos in the afterlife greeting ghosts of Lizzie Borden and her lover. Sarah Paulson plays the serial killer who was sentenced to death by lethal injection in 1992. Max Winkler helmed six of the eight episodes that make up this fourth season.
