Max Winkler joins Ryan Murphy universe after indie film struggles
Indie director Max Winkler began directing episodes for Ryan Murphy's television shows in 2021 following financial difficulties with his 2019 boxing drama Jungleland.
Previous career trajectory and challenges
Winkler directed sitcoms like New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine during the 2010s before making the dark comedy Flower in 2017. His gritty boxing drama Jungleland, starring Charlie Hunnam and Jack O'Connell, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019. The film was sold to Paramount as part of a junk deal from its financier while theaters were closed due to COVID.
Shift in professional focus
The director stated he needed to make money after losing funds on the boxing project and buying a house. He admitted to stopping the pretense of being another Paul Thomas Anderson to become a craftsman instead. Winkler entered the Ryan Murphy universe by directing episodes of American Horror Stories and American Horror Story in 2021.
