Madonna to open MTV Video Music Awards after 23-year absence

MTV and CBS announced that Madonna will host the opening of the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on September 27.

Return to the stage

The pop icon is set to perform for the first time at the event in over two decades. Her last appearance occurred in 2003 during a collaboration with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. This performance follows the release of her new album Confessions II.

Nomination record broken

Madonna has received 11 nominations for this year's ceremony, which is the highest count for any performer. She previously led the nomination tally in 1990 and 1998 throughout her career. Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations while Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande are tied at seven.

The show is produced by Gunpowder & Sky with Van Toffler serving as the producer. Jesse Ignjatovic, Barb Bialkowski, Bruce Gillmer, Barry Barclay and Floris Bauer are listed as executive producers. Melanie Block will co-executive produce alongside Gary Lanvy who serves as a co-producer.
