Cardellini discusses her role as the original killer

The star describes playing Pamela Voorhees as a pivot toward full-blown horror. She recently won an Emmy for her work on DTF St Louis before taking this new role. Cardellini notes that Jason did not wear his mask until the third movie in the series.

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane wrote the part specifically

Brad Caleb Kane, the showrunner for Crystal Lake, created the character after seeing her performance in Netflix thriller Dead to Me. He is known as a devoted fan of the Friday the 13th franchise. Kane felt Cardellini would understand what fans were wanting for the project.

The film rewrites earlier storylines in the timeline

Crystal Lake moves Jason's drowning from the 1950s to the early 1970s. The franchise has previously sent Jason into space, so timeline tweaking is considered fair game by the creators. Pamela Voorhees acts out of vengeance for her son's death in this version.
