La Bola Negra wins top audience award at Toronto Film Festival

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's La Bola Negra received the People's Choice honor at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

Spanish duo wins top prize

The film, written and directed by Los Javis, secured the highest audience vote as the festival concluded. Netflix acquired the Spanish-language epic after it premiered at Cannes earlier in the year. The creators stated that knowing audiences connected with their personal story was a great gift.

Other contenders for the award

Peter Farrelly's I Play Rocky finished as the first runner-up for the top audience prize. Sian Heder's Being Heumann placed second in the same category during the event. Matthew Rankin's Ladies and Gentlemen won the specific award for best Midnight Madness title.

Previous recognition at Cannes

Los Javis previously received the festival's best director prize at Cannes in a tie with Paweł Pawlikowski. The film recounts the lives of three generations of queer men linked by love and loss.
