Cena supports Gunn's new direction

The actor stated in an interview with Josh Horowitz that someone else needs to sit in the director's chair now. Cena explained that he would wear the helmet as long as Gunn needed him to be around. He added that working with the creator makes him a better performer.

Origins of the show

Cena noted that Gunn wrote Peacemaker after finishing Guardians of the Galaxy and getting invited to DC Studios. The writer created the series while bored between projects involving Suicide Squad and during the COVID pandemic. His character first appeared in The Suicide Squad before the show premiered on HBO Max in 2022.

Recent production timeline

Season 1 wrapped previously, but Cena confirmed he has not been in costume since then. The series returned for its second season in October 2025 after a gap of more than three years. Gunn and Peter Safran were hired as co-CEOs to reboot the DC Universe with new projects.
