Plot centers on two women

The narrative follows Zinari, an upper-class entrepreneur who chooses to remain childless. Her former slave Nafisa fights for more agency within the culture. When Zinari refuses to have children, her husband cites religious law to take Nafisa as a second wife.

Story spans multiple locations

The action takes place across 24 scenes that map pre-colonial history mainly around the emirates of the Sokoto Caliphate. The play also includes diversions to Libya and Egypt during this period.
